Chapter 20: Finding a New Chronos

The rat-man slammed the gun into the hard steel with a sharp clang, his figure swiftly darting to the upturned end of the weapon. With a forceful stamp of his foot, the brutal momentum instantly bent the barrel.

Whoosh!

The rat-man leader’s entire body shot into the air like a projectile.

Still mid-air, he coiled his long tail tightly around the barrel, wrenched it free from the steel plate, and thrust it upward like a whip—stabbing forward!

Boom!

Lance pierced into a protruding steel pipe like a sharp sword.

With the gun coiled around his tail, he moved with agility, scaling it in two swift moves.

Liang Xi’s heart felt as if it were being torn apart.

In this world, to find someone who truly cares for you is rare—was he, of all people, going to die now?

At the end of the month, the image of those final two minutes flashed through his mind.

It was the shock on his father’s face when they just learned that, in 120 seconds, every one would have 150 years of Chronos deducted…

A Liang gritted his teeth and charged deeper into the passage. You have to hold on. I must… find the legendary weapon and bring it to you!

In the Hunter Alliance base tens of kilometers away, Chu Chiang felt the images through their mental link. After a long hesitation, he let out a sigh.

–So there’s no option to hide the name after all…–

He walked to the window on the fourth floor.

On the broad stone slab below, Mu Xiaoyu was holding a glass of water and chatting and laughing with others. None of the people around her received the psychic link image.

……

Clang! Clang! Dang!

The spear shadows rained down like a storm. Yang Zicang couldn’t dodge them all—just two hits cost him two hundred years of Chronos.

He retreated quickly while evading attacks from the three monsters. Their tails acting like nimble hands thrust lances at him once more.

Bam! Yang Zicang felt another hundred years of Chronos stripped away from him.

Every strike shaved off exactly a hundred years—could this spear be a Cent-Arms!

Three figures chased after Yang Zicang at breakneck speed, charging straight into the cavern-like room. Those nearby, who had been curious about what was up there, finally got a glimpse of its contents.

–Such high-purity mana stones.– Said the person beside Luo Xin.

–I thought there was something special up there, but it’s just these things.–

Within just a few seconds, chaos erupted. The rat-man’s gunmanship was fierce and overbearing; two shots swept through the area, sending countless shattered mana stones flying everywhere.

–Damn it! Counting the principal, I only have over three thousand years’ worth of Chronos left!–

He dare not stop his mana deployment for a single moment, yet Yang Zicang was still caught by the fierce wind—Lance’s sweeping strike engulfed the entire cavern.

Boom! Boom! Boom!

This strike carried unparalleled momentum, forcing Yang Zicang, backed into a corner, to instinctively raise his pitch-black iron tome to block it. Yet the force was brutally overwhelming, and the spear slammed into the book, driving him deep into the wall.

The wall collapsed with a thunderous roar.

Chronos lost hundreds of years in an instant.

–Urgh~!– His brain surged with blood as the shadow of death loomed over him.

Boom!

Suddenly, from the gap in the iron door behind the three ratmen, countless dark silhouettes, tinged crimson by the glow, surged forth.

The rubble that had been holding the iron door was ground to dust by the spear’s afterimages.

A mournful whisper from the girl echoed through the air.

Lifting his dust-covered face, Yang Zicang saw the three ratmen standing frozen in place, as if paralyzed by some unknown force.

The silver-white halos on their chests rapidly darkened to a deep, eerie crimson, flickering with a malevolent glow.

{A hundred more remain…}

A deep, emotionless male voice resonated in the minds of all who were watching.

The ratman leader let out a piercing shriek.

Outside, the swarm of rats charged relentlessly over the cliff’s edge, plummeting straight down into the tunnel below.

One by one, dark shadows emerged from the shattered bodies of the monsters whose innards had burst forth, streaking through the air to converge behind the iron door.

Within the great hall, the monsterous aura rising from within that silhouette, which had hung suspended for untold ages, gradually grew stronger.

{Daddy… is dead, waaah, aahhhh—ehehehehehe!}

Under that voice, Yang Zicang’s emotions edged toward madness.

{Just ten more, only ten more—don’t stop.}

The rat-man’s body blazed with intense silver light, suppressing the crimson glow.

The whistling ceased, and the rat-man seemed to gain even more of that strange power. While resisting the spiritual influence of the –Resister,– his triangle flickered, and he thrust his spear forward.

At that same moment, the iron door behind the rat-man was pushed open by an invisible force, and the heads of two struggling rats exploded with a loud bang.

{Eight more left. Give the order quickly, sacrifice them for me.}

Behind the door, the crimson compound eyes of the figure in the great hall opened, gazing this way.

After locking eyes with it, Yang Zicang felt his mind go blank, losing consciousness as he stared blankly ahead.

This thrust from the Rat Punisher was now unavoidable.

[Chronos Void invested, 1000N, 12 minutes 47 seconds remaining. Because I am the mysterious triangle, I can triple boost!]

A black phantom suddenly flashed at the junction of the silver-white Lance, like a spinning miniature black hole, pulling the young man’s body forward.

Simultaneously, something else was drawn forward as well—the shattered book of black iron.

Bang! The Lance pierced through the black hole phantom, tore through the pages’ divine image, and bore straight through the entire torn-open iron tome, its spearpoint stabbing into Yang Zicang’s chest, splattering crimson blood.

[Chronos: Decrease by 3000N.]

Yang Zicang felt his life draining away rapidly; in mere seconds, his hair turned grizzled white. The stabbing pain faintly roused his nerves, which had long ceased to think.

[Judgment concluded.]

The Punisher who struck that blow, as though fulfilling its duty, let the glow of Moxel fade from its form.

It instantly let out a frenzied, senseless roar, reverting to its common status as a lair overlord.

The crimson radiance from beyond the gate easily melted into the ratman leader’s frame, forcing a strident shriek from its throat.

Outside, the monsters inside the fractured passage fled in all directions; only a few rats that had not scattered far heard this cry, wheeling back without regard for their lives and charging over the cliff’s edge again.

A halo ring appeared around Yang Zicang’s chest, the digits to the right of the decimal point shrinking with dizzying speed.

[Remaining Chronos: 0.0R]

Yang Zicang struggled to lower his head, vision growing dim, and cast his hazy gaze upon the Lance stabbed into his chest.

The black hole at the tip of the silver lance began to spin, twisting the shaft as it was about to spiral into the void and vanish from this world.

Suddenly, the digital positions within the circle on his chest stretched outward.

Moxel seemed to search for a digit that was not zero in the utterly impossible.

A red blood cell died, followed by a nerve net twisted within the skin, decaying.

[Remaining Chronos 0.0000000001R.]

–This isn’t Earth—this is… the hall of Chronos.–

His body trembled as countless bacteria and cells within him perished at once.

[Remaining Chronos 0.00000326R!]

Yang Zicang, head hung low, grasped the silver shaft embedded in his heart with both hands.

In his dazed mind, only one command remained.

Before his life reset to zero, find new Chronos.

At the same time, the cold, merciless voice spoke:

{Just one more, just one more.}

All this happened in the span of a lightning flash.

The head of the rat chief, now slightly shrunken, swelled abruptly with bursting blood vessels.

–Aaaaaah!–

The aged Yang Zicang, using the last of his strength, yanked out the shortened lance and hurled it.

The silver spear, most of it already swallowed by the black hole, tore through the space ahead!

Bang!

The rat leader’s head exploded, and in that same instant, the lance shaft whisked through its cranium!

It was unclear to whom the final kill should ultimately be attributed.

Countless blasted filth, along with more than half of the monster’s head still bearing a pained grimace, were drawn into the black hole by the silver Lance. Also drawn in was the newborn, unseen dark phantom.

{How dare you!}

Within his mind, the resolute thunderous roar of a defender erupted.

[**I have harvested 56.3N. **]

The hall was filled with a crimson light as hundreds of shadows burst forth from the monster’s body, sweeping across the chamber.

–Ahhh!–

Yang Zicang let out a wild roar.

[**Primary Corpse Jump initiated. **]

His legs coiled and pushed off, and now, covered in blood with a withered and aged appearance, he lunged forward like a resurrected zombie.

His skin and hair color quickly restored.

[**Command. **]

Yang Zicang twisted his body in the air with an uncanny precision, adjusting his stance so that as his hand slammed the iron door shut with a bang, his own body would crash against it, pressing the door tight.

Bang! Thud!

The chilling, eerie atmosphere vanished in an instant.

[Rating Committee Member No. 41 was astonished by my mental tenacity, for after Chronos reset to zero, I relied on sheer willpower to extend my physical instincts by an additional 3.26 seconds and successfully seized Chronos.]

[In the depths of despair, I found a new possibility.]

[I, the great Quad, have harvested a complete Mail Insignia. This is the Recompense Assessment Committee’s compensation for my survival.]

My skin was plump and full, my heart resumed beating, but more crimson blood also swiftly gushed from the appalling wound over my heart.

[Assessment Committee Member No. 41 lifted the ownership restriction of the gun-shaped Chronos combat device.]

[Assessment Committee Member No. 41 informed me that the prime opportunity to kill the –Waste Mother-** had been missed.**]

[Assessment Committee Member No. 41 marked the existence of a –Mature Resistor-** for me.**]

[Mature Resistor discovered, Discoverer: ElectYang Zicang.]

Yang Zicang, dazed and confused, leaned against the iron door, with the rock below his waist that had been shattered by the monster.

At the very end, his life force had already hit zero, but the residual momentum of his body carried out his brain’s final command: draw the gun, swing the gun.

The gun barrel in his hand, which was continuously shortening as it entered the black hole, stopped, and then reversed to reveal the complete form of a silver Lance.

Several lines of mental connection shot over, but the unconscious Yang Zicang no longer had the waking willpower to receive them.

……

Somewhere.

This car of the iron-red subway was clean and bright.

On a metal bench, a man in a silver uniform sat with his sword planted beside him, his head bowed in silence.

His eyes were half open, with a gaze deathly still.

A fragrant breeze swept by, and a pair of tightly sculpted, slender legs stopped beside Matt Chao. The girl crouched down and said,

–They say he’s dead. Now you can come back with me, right?–

–He’s not dead.–

The man lifted his head, his handsome face cold and expressionless.

–It seems even the world agrees that he is destined to die by my sword. I’m starting to have some admiration for him.–
