Chapter 1: Breaking… Whose Window

When Yang Zicang woke up, he found himself inside an unfamiliar bus.

“I… didn’t die?”

Under the dim light outside the window, a yellow taxi drove past the bus stopped in the middle of the road.

In the moment it passed, Yang Zicang saw a lean young man in the taxi’s passenger seat, his face chiseled and sharp as if carved by blade and axe.

He wore a dark-patterned blue shirt, had a black sports bag slung across his shoulder, a baseball cap on his head, and a blue earring on his ear.

That was himself! Another version of himself?!

Yang Zicang’s pupils contracted as he watched in disbelief while the taxi carrying his other self and his younger brother playing in the back seat drove into the unfamiliar neighborhood beside them.

He slapped the bus window with both hands, pressing his face against it to get a clearer look at that person.

“Hey!”

He shouted loudly, but the outside world could not hear the sounds inside the bus at all.

Countless fragmented memories surged toward him — explosions, scattered flesh and blood, heads tossed into the air, and a monster flying like a metallic winged human…

Yang Zicang turned to look at the bus: all the men and women inside had fallen into deep slumber, and a strange, eerie atmosphere enveloped the place.

It seemed as though someone’s heartbeat could be heard.

“What the hell is going on? No, I need to get out of here!”

He stood up and ran toward the bus door.

The driver’s seat was shrouded in smoke, covered with a strange weblike pattern as thick as a thumb. There, a pale white ring of light slowly flickered and hovered, with indiscernible digits inside, about to vanish.

The air grew viscous and suffocating, as if something were about to be born inside the bus.

The gloomy atmosphere made Yang Zicang’s hairs stand on end.

The door handle became slippery, a fleshy membrane growing over it. Even with both hands, he could not pull open this tightly shut door…

“Where… is this?” Several voices sounded from within the bus; the drowsy passengers were gradually waking, and a commotion began to stir inside.

Suddenly, inside the power-cut bus, the onboard TV screen lit up. An unstable signal flickered, and a voice emerged through the static.

“This bus has already entered the state of Incubation Prelude. You’d best get out within three minutes.”

“This door won’t open at all!” Yang Zicang said anxiously to the TV, not knowing whether the other party could see what was happening here.

“Let me.” A balding man stood up and walked to the door; three others gathered around as well. They were all middle-aged men in their forties or fifties, strong in the hands. Yang Zicang stepped back to make way for them.

At the same time, someone used a claw hammer to try to pry open the window glass, but no matter how much force they used, they could not break it.

“Ladies and gentlemen, the state of this bus is no longer the same. In a sense, it has already become a special lifeform about to be born — and you are the nourishment for its birth.”

Everyone stared at the onboard TV screen, either bewildered or frowning.

“Hey, who are you? Are you people kidnappers?”

A fat man stood up and said this while walking toward the driver’s seat, trying to start the engine — but the area was filled with a ghastly chill. Before he could even get close, his whole body trembled, and he dared not proceed further.

“About two minutes and thirty seconds remain. If you cannot successfully get out of here, you will become its meal.”

The figure on the TV was very blurry, the screen constantly flickering left and right; Yang Zicang could not make out his appearance at all.

“Excuse me, how do we get out?” A girl around twenty in the back seat asked weakly.

“If you are willing to agree to a transaction, then I will tell you the way out.”

The bus immediately erupted into turmoil.

“So you really are kidnappers. Hey, who has a phone? Call the police.”

“My phone is gone!” a woman cried out.

“Hey, isn’t this what I wore yesterday? What do you people want!”

Some people pounded on the windows and shouted loudly, but the passersby outside seemed unable to see the bus at all — no one paid any attention.

Yang Zicang clearly remembered that he had already died once. He said to the TV: “What do you want?”

“Heh, so there is someone who can grasp the situation, after all.”

The dark figure inside the TV showed an appreciative expression and laughed coldly:

“The transaction is — within seven days, pay me 50 years of Chronos. If you agree, the deal is done. How about it?”

“50 years of Chronos? What is that, a commodity?”

“A commodity? Hmph, you could say that. To this world, that is your principal. Make up your minds quickly — less than two minutes remain.”

No matter how hard they pulled, the people at the door could not get it open. The atmosphere inside the bus grew increasingly gloomy.

The flickering orb of light at the driver’s seat vanished completely. At the same time, the smoke that had spread from there merged into the whole bus.

The bus seemed to shudder, and an even stronger sense of dread and unease gripped everyone’s hearts.

From the ceiling of the bus, black crystalline membranes like spiderwebs began to grow, as if a terrifying demon was about to be born.

“50 years… Does it mean we have to use our lifespan to open it?” Yang Zicang said in disbelief.

Those around him glanced at Yang Zicang as if looking at a madman, then anxiously turned their gaze back toward the door.

Upon hearing these words, the figure on the TV paused, and a dry laugh came from his throat.

“So you figured it out on your own. Heh, in that case, I’ll just say it outright.”

“This bus will devour all of your lives. Its doors and windows are no longer doors and windows in the physical sense. Your attacks are futile.”

“To open it, you must either use time to ripen it, or use a span of time that exceeds the time it contains to smash it open. And with every additional death, the difficulty of opening it will only increase further.”

Everyone stared at him in shock, their minds not yet having processed this information.

“I’ll do it!”

The balding man pushed everyone aside, grabbed the door handle with both hands, his face filled with fury.

“Director Huang, you… do you really believe those words?”

“We’ll know just by trying, won’t we?”

“But what if it’s true…”

“Heh, if it’s true, so be it.” Director Huang, with a fierce expression, growled in a low voice: “No matter how many years of my life you devour — open up!”

Crash! With a heavy thud, the bus door was flung open instantly.

Director Huang’s skin visibly loosened and darkened, his remaining ring of hair gradually turned white, and age spots appeared on his face.

Several women in their seats instantly covered their mouths.

The middle-aged man who knew Director Huang grabbed onto a bus seat with trembling hands.

He had aged — this was actually real!

Director Huang blinked his eyes and wiped them hard with his hand.

“So this… is what presbyopia feels like… I just… used up over thirty years…”

The bus was filled with the sound of collectively drawn breaths.

“Very good. You have been saved.”

The person inside the TV laughed heavily:

“Since I’ve already played the good guy, I might as well see it through. Next, some information about this monster…”

“If you can shoot dead this monster, not only the monster’s lifespan, but the lifespans of all those who died inside it will transfer to the one who defeats it. Hmph, enjoy death well.”

The screen flickered, then disappeared.

“Quick, let’s get out — time is about to run out!” Everyone around scrambled to their feet in panic.

Director Huang cast a glance at the people inside the bus with his dim, aged eyes from the doorway, then stepped off.

“Old Huang, we really owe you this time. I never imagined you were such a noble person.”

“Heh heh, don’t mention it. After all… everyone has to die someday.”

After stepping down, he stood there by the door, his body tensed. The several people behind him preparing to get off wanted to urge him on, but ultimately held back.

After all, this man before them was the hero who had just saved everyone.

“I…” Director Huang turned to look inside and smiled, saying: “Sorry, everyone.”

Before anyone could comprehend the meaning of these words, he grabbed the bus door with both hands and yanked it shut with a clang, gripping the handle from outside in a death grip!

“Don’t open the door again.” He said this quietly, as if speaking to himself.

The people inside pounded frantically on the glass windows, but Director Huang outside merely lowered his head, closing his eyes, not daring to look inside.

“With my thirty years in it, it should be less than two minutes now, child…”

Just moments ago, after ripening this door with thirty years, he had felt a faint, elusive feedback in his heart — the monster about to be born seemed to regard him as its father!

His whole body flushed with heat, and after a moment of internal struggle, he finally made up his mind… he was going to die anyway, so he might as well gamble!

“I’m sorry, everyone. If I can gain more lifespan, from now on I will definitely be a good person, find ways to kill as many of these things as possible, and honor your souls…”

There were at least over ten people on this bus. At forty or fifty years per person, that was at least five or six hundred years of lifespan!

“If I fail… let’s go to hell together!”

His face twisted as he held onto the door; battered by the people inside, the door deformed. Two or three times it was nearly pulled open, but he pressed down on it with all his might.

Inside, three more people had already aged. They cursed loudly and kicked at this door — a door that, once shut, would cost everyone more than thirty years of lifespan just to smash open!

“Didn’t we already open it? Why does it need lifespan again!”

“I could feel I could ripen it just now, but now I can’t anymore.”

Everyone was both frantic and furious.

“Big brother, are we going to die?”

Yang Zicang was squeezed by the crowd to the point of losing his footing. Similarly pushed aside by the throng was a girl of about seventeen or eighteen.

Mu Xiaoyu, helpless, tears welling in her eyes, grabbed his arm with both hands, instinctively treating this person who had first discovered that lifespan could be used as her anchor.

“Die? No, we won’t!”

Yang Zicang steadied himself against the window, then gritted his teeth and reached out to take the emergency window hammer from the wall. He raised the hammer high, shouting in his heart: I’ve already died anyway, no matter how many years — break!

Swinging up a fierce gust with his hand, he smashed it hard against the glass window already covered in web-like fungal lines.

“Crack!”

A crack appeared in the glass window.

The instant the hammer struck, Yang Zicang felt the vital energy within his body being drawn out through his arm, clashing once with the invisible energy surging upon the glass.

In the girl’s eyes, Yang Zicang had matured considerably in the blink of an eye.

“Open!”

The young man raised the window hammer once more and brought it down again!

His skin rapidly aged.

Bang! The window instantly shattered like years-old resin, and he smashed through it with one punch.

Total lifespan consumed by two strikes… forty-five years!
